State of the premium
Is the game still worth it?
The Hermès secondhand premium — what a quota bag fetches over its retail price — peaked near 2.2× in 2022 and has fallen to about 1.4× by 2025. Here's the cited trend, and the current resale multiple for every spec.
Short answer: the resale upside is real but shrinking. The market-wide secondhand premium has fallen about 36% from its 2022 peak — from roughly 2.2× over retail to about 1.4× by 2025. A bag bought at retail can still resell above list, but the easy flip that drove the game's folklore has thinned. It matters in both directions: for a buyer chasing an offer, and for anyone deciding whether to sell what they already have.

The premium, spec by spec
The index above is a market-wide auction average. Individual specs vary widely — this is our cited resale median divided by the documented 2026 US retail for each. A Mini Kelly still carries a far richer premium than a Constance; an exotic barely clears retail.
Retail: documented 2026 US list. Resale: cited pristine-condition median (Sotheby's, Fashionphile, 1stDibs, The Luxury Closet). Premium = resale ÷ retail; condition, colour and hardware move the real number. Exotic resale is thin — read its multiple loosely. How the index is built — the Bernstein basis, readings vs. interpolations, and the auction-vs-marketplace distinction — is in the premium-index methodology.
